red roof

This was one of the more enjoyable times I've had in a while.

Through a friend of a friend, we got some studio time for really cheap today. Rick was the owner, a quiet Scottish man who was very interested in why we were filming for a church.

Anyways, you'll see the short videos on the site in the coming weeks, but we're hoping they turn out well. Joe was doing the camera-work, which was great cause he knows what he's doing. Mike and I, though mostly Mike did some of the acting, and a master's student, Eric, did the micing (poor guy's arms were dead after two hours).

We didn't know what to expect when we got there. It turned out to be this beautiful studio, with over 16,000 sq. ft. of pure white. You would look straight ahead and literally feel like you were seeing nothing cause your eyes couldn't focus anywhere (you had to be there).

We plan to show commercials during the beginning of the evening, mostly funny or sarcastic videos that probably wouldn't fly in the States:)

live music in our backyard

Got back home from meeting with some people to hear nice live background music to our dinner tonight. Thought I'd throw on the video and show you what we heard for most of the evening, plus some views of the castle and the street we live on.

all about the ceilidh

10 days and counting.

That's right, we're 10 days away from kicking this Church off with yes, a dance. Ceilidh's are traditional Scottish dances that are very popular here in the Edinburgh. The student union runs them every quarter and they sell out immediately.
We're planning to have dinner, videos, "pub quizzes", a short talk and dancing the remainder of the night. We're all pumped for the festivities to begin. We're already looking at having over a hundred people to attend the event, potentially going higher than we anticipated. Our prayer is to capture attention with a taste of Eikon: show our passion and vision for Eikon and have some fun on the side:)
As the next several days go on, we'll keep updating the process leading up to our official start. It's been just under 6 months of being here and we're only beginning to see what the Lord has in store for this Church.

Throw us up on your prayer list for the next week because this is the result of a few years of vision-casting going all the way back to an American, Irishman and a Scot feeling called to start something in the city of Edinburgh. We've got a long, exciting, challenging road ahead of us, so continue to pray for the leadership, particularly Tony and Yvonne, and for the people attending the Ceilidh.

Ebay meets Eating Out

This site, for now, is only available for two cities: Edinburgh and Glasgow. Seems like quite a unique combination of ideas! For a student population (or anyone looking to save a few pounds here and there), this would perhaps be a good way to go!

Essentially it looks like you can bid for meals at various restaurants...when I checked it out there was a 50 pound voucher to a really classy restaurant going for 25 quid! Other places offer a nice lunch for two for 14 pound, or dinner with drinks for 20 pound...probably a lot cheaper than going a la carte...

I wonder if anything like this has taken root in the States yet...? I know Ed (Dad) Schmidgall has saved LOADS on hotel rooms by using Priceline...this looks like the same concept except for restaurants.

Check it out!

Environmental Wardens at our door

One of the things about living on High Street is the garbage collection. Pick-up days are Monday and Thursday, which isn't all bad, unless you host a get together on Friday and a few big packages arrive on Saturday then miss the pick-up on Monday... :) This means you have smelly garbage sitting in your flat for nearly a full week!

Well, anyway, we walked in the door last night and, well, it was just time to take the garbage out, regardless of pick-up times. We've had to do this before; Dave had his "spot" where he'd add our garbage to a business' dumpster. Well, apparently the business didn't appreciate this large of a donation to their dumpster, so they took it out and set it in an alley then called the "Environmental Wardens".

These Wardens, who were really very nice, opened our garbage and went through it looking for anything with a name. Remember those packages we got? Yah, they found the shipment tags with Dave's name and our address on them. So, this afternoon we had two Wardens at our door interrogating Dave and, in the end, fining us 50 pounds.

Lesson learned. :)

da bears

Classic night in Edinburgh: Kate and I were really tired cause we didn't get much sleep the night before. She elected to stay home and hit the sack while I went to a bar to see the Bears game. I had been invited by one of my few american friends over here from University, but walking into the bar, you would have thought you were in some bar in Boston; it was jammed with Americans.
What a game, can't complain about the excitement. I yelled for the Bears in the first few minutes, and instantly had a large group of friend acting like we knew each other for years. By the end of the night, I knew half the bar....laughin, yellin at Grossman, talkin about studies, Europe, Edinburgh, where they were from....what a night.

It was a bizarre feeling to walk outside and realize you were in Edinburgh. I had just been with a crowd full of americans, eating pappa johns pizza, and watching american football, it was an exciting reality to "be" back in Edinburgh.

I suggested an Eikon Super Bowl Party, but I don't think anyone would show up.

Pastor's Din Din

Enjoyed an evening with a majority of Assemblies pastor's in Scotland. We were the youngest their by about 15 years, but it was a good time. We sat next to a couple that pastor in a small town some distance from Edinburgh. They were a riot, Robert told us crazy stories from 25 years of police force experience he has before retiring and going into the ministry.
None other than Michael McNamee was there to give some remarks. I had asked Tony if he was delivering a message, and Tony responded by suggesting that he'd probably give a hello and make some jokes. Isn't that a typical message of Michael though:) He honestly could be a successful comedian, I'm convinced of it.

For those who don't know, he's a pastor from Northern Ireland who's been through quite a past. The Lord kicked his $*#, and he's been doing incredible ministry throughout Europe since: Convoy of Hope (Humanitarian work), Master's Commission Europe Director, Head of Church Planting in Europe, Evangelist, and a good fund raiser:) He's the busiest man I know. I've known him since I was zero back in chi-town and then spent some time with him while I was in Europe some years back.
If you want to really see him thrive, you need to see him in Portugal, he's the man there. He was a missionary there for 15 years and did wonders for the Teen Challenge program, along with reviving the Assemblies in that country.

Filling the Void

Well, as Dave said in his last post, we have been busy! It's really good to be back in Edinburgh, back in the swing of things...though I did very much enjoy our time in Chicago over Christmas break.

Just before we went home for the holidays, many of you know that I withdrew from my program at University of Edinburgh. Though the University is world-class in many many areas, their digital media program seemed to be playing catch-up (though aren't we all in this industry...). It took quite a few weeks of really wrestling with this decision to finally resolve that this just isn't the time and perhaps digital media just isn't the program.

My first choice of programs at the Uni was an MBA in Global Innovation (which still invigorates me just thinking about it), but it wasn't offered in the 2006-07 or or the 07-08 term...because my ambitions in international entrepreneurial ministry have not waned, I might still look into a program like the MBA Global Innovation in the future.

I did get to finish off the term with the soccer team, however, and we secured a place in the BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) Championships, which take place this Spring. I still train with the team though and think there might be an opportunity for me to coach now, instead of play...an awesome opportunity that would not have been possible had I not been a student for first term. So, a committee needs to decide whether or not to take me on as coach, a decision that won't happen for several weeks (probably late Feb.), but I'll keep you posted.

Quite a few people have very carefully (and cutely) asked how I'll be filling my time now that I'm not in school...my answer: "What time??" :) I have spent many hours on Eikon's website since we've been back and still have much more to do (as you can tell, I'm sure). I am back to doing freelance work and have a few projects boiling over on the back burners that they've been on for a couple months...so, work is work and it's filling the school-void quite nicely so far.

Then there's the social life...! :) I love having friends over for meals and games; we try and do something every week at least once. Just to give you a glimpse of my schedule this week: Tonight I'm going to view 2 flats at 6:30 then 7:00, then we'll take a train to Livingston for our first Midweek Meet (small group meeting) at Mike and Claire's. Tomorrow I'm having lunch with my friend Sarah, then we've been invited to Ben and Jemia's (our friends) for dinner and games. Friday we'll be having several friends to our flat for a night of cards. Saturday morning I'm leading a track ("Pancakes & HTML") for a couple of the Master's Commission students (teaching them 101 web design and development), then that evening Dave and I will go with Tony and Yvonne to Perth for a Pastor's dinner with Regional AoG reps and Michael McNamee.

Work is like the putty that fills in all the cracks in that schedule. Add possibly coaching soccer to that and...well, I just don't see the huge void that one might expect.

Oh, yes! And, of course, for Eikon I am working to organize and plan an internship for one of Calvary's own, Sarah Penrod! The Penrod family has been a part of Calvary for years, serving in a variety of ways, and Sarah has been involved in NXT for quite some time (both as a student and as a student-leader). She will be coming over from March until mid-May and will be involved in many projects, which I am planning and organizing. We are excited to have her, that's for sure!

So I think that brings you up to date on what's going on on my end! I know I've been MIA from the blog for a little while, think Dave has been doing a great job posting!! But I'll be sure to drop in more regularly, I do miss hearing from you!

Good Week

Kate and I have had a good week. I began my second semester of grad school. The first semester was great to just meet people, get to hear their stories, why they're here, their interests, politics, and grabbing a pulse of their spiritual journeys. It was great to walk into my first lecture and see people truly excited to be back and say hello to one another. There was no doubt that it had been a meaningful first semester of building connections.
Kate has been spending hours upon hours building Eikon's website. She's currently working on the video section and it's really sweet, seriously. You'll be able to watch, get an abstract of the message, and be able to take notes and email them to yourself!
The Master's Commission team has returned, and it was great to see them. We love being with the students, they're a fun bunch to be around. We're looking forward to increasing our time spent with them; I'll be speaking with them every few weeks, while Kate will be doing a women's small group. They will also begin helping us on a weekly basis to prep for sunday meetings and creative outreach.

I took this shot of my beautiful wife the other night on a walk through the city, something we like to do often. Makes life much easier when anywhere you walk is picturesque and romantic.

i(phone)wantone

Click HERE to watch Steve Jobs give some of his Keynote address to all the other masses of Mac nerds. These are actually pretty incredible. Kate and I have watched his Keynote address several times.

One of the coolest features is the voicemail: you no longer have to sift through all your voicemails to find the one you want. On the iphone, you can choose whatever voicemail message you want.

This morning in Church during announcements I spoke on why we all need iphone's as a Church:)

We had our youngest member of Eikon enter this world. Safiso and Zoro are a great couple that have been joining us and had a child 4 days ago.
Kate and I had the opportunity to go over to their house shortly after she gave birth and I got some shots and video. You'll notice in the video that Kate is holding the little Ethan, which is good cause it gets the baby thing out of her system:) seriously.
Ethan's middle name, Nashe, means "with God". I love African names, they have so much meaning. I remember when spending a brief time in Addis with Aunt Karen that each person's name meant something.
Anyways, we're really happy for Sofiso and Zoro.

the forest

I walk by this place everytime I go to lectures. It took a few months to really take notice, but finally went when kate was invited to listen to one of her friends perform during an open-mic night.

It's called "The Forest." The best way to describe it would be an art cafe. To be ironic, it's a really classy dive. It has a gallery which often times has the appearance of somebody's garbage glued together as a visual expression of, well, garbage. In the back is the cafe, a room where each piece of furniture stands alone in style and form. Nothing matches, but in some way it all makes sense. The walls are covered in abstract art and all they serve is vegetarian and vegan food. I had a great night when Kate and I went a few months back, but didn't return for some time. I've gone several times now and I'm beginning to really love my time there.

Howard Schultz took a trip to France and was fascinated by a little known concept at the time called "coffee bars." Instead of purchasing bags of coffee, or running into a 7/11 for a quick cup, people actually sat and enjoyed a cup in a cozy atmosphere. His trip completely changed the way Americans' drink coffee. He took over a little-known company in Seattle called Starbucks and the rest is history.
There is a Starbucks literally 100 yards from our flat, and probably 20 around the city. They're seemingly everywhere, and they exist not just for the coffee, but for the experience. He regarded his comfortable yet stylish decor with trendy music as someone's "third home". It was a place to relax from home and work, an intersection for people to meet and have a conversation, read, laugh, relax along with a double-shot-vanilla-mocha-soy-low-fat-latte.

The concept is certainly not new, but we want Eikon to heed this notion and make strategic and efficient use of our potential facilities. Again, not a new concept. Several Churches I know are taking full advantage of creating a "third home" for anyone to connect at, and I'm not talking about an auditorium where people can congregate once or twice per week (though often times necessary). I'm talking about an "Ebeneezer's", or a Hostel with a cafe idea that my friend Jay has, along with many others that use their facilities 15-20 hours for anyone every day. In some form or another, we would love for Eikon to do the same.
My point is that we're currently meeting on Sundays and will be officially "kicking" this Church off in less than a month!!!! However, property or rent for that matter is so insanely expensive that our vision will be something we'll continue to pray over and strive for. Property potential would completely be a God-thing because that's way out of our league at this point. This certainly doesn't mean we're weary of the present. On the contrary, we're more excited than ever to be officially starting Eikon.

The Forest is living a simliar notion of "third home" and doing it with excellence. They have a constant flow of very diverse people walking in and out of those doors. I've been praying for possibilities of not only a place of our own, but a place to temporarily use for the time being. The Forest is a non-profit cafe and open to anyone who wants to start a "group" (save the rainforest group, photography, vegans 'r' us, I'm making these up but you get the point.) They are also looking for volunteers to help at the Cafe. I feel like these are two open doors and believe this could be a great opportunity to connect with an array of people with diverse backgrounds.

Please pray for what this represents: a potential space to challenge, connect and share the reality of a relevant, personal, and accepting God.

As Zeb Minghistu once said, "I'll let the Spirit do it's work and I'll try to stay out of the way."

Church is a verb

Luke 10:25-28
"Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "What is written in the law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" He answered: "Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with your mind and, Love your neighbor as yourself." "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied, "DO this and you will live."

Do this. As Tony points out, Jesus didn't say, "believe this, sing this, memorize this, etc." The Church is a verb.

exodus

Check out this 27 minute video written and directed by Joe. His budget was around $100,000, considerably low for industry standards as he suggests, but nothing short of a well-done short indie film.

This is his futuristic view of the story of Moses, most interestingly his finale.

Four.

I met a guy named Joe a while back and is a fascinating guy. He studied film in school and is looking for work out here while staying with his girlfriend.

I'll post his largest project to date shortly, entitled "exodus", a futuristic interpretation of the story of moses.

Here is a very short film he did entitled "four".

He's become very interested in helping us with some potential projects, which is very exciting.

Brett

Great to be home so we could see the newest member of the family, Brett Christain Ericson. Kerry had him a few weeks before christmas, so it was great to love on the little guy.

I managed to get a pretty good shot of him

zurich

This post is on a bit of a delay, but did want to tell it:

Kate and I flew home a few weeks ago for a few purposes: be with family, shoot a wedding, and see one of the best neurologists in the US about my back.

We woke up the morning of the flight and abruptly discovered that though our flight was at 10:10am, it was now 10:20am. We had stayed up late the night before packing and somehow missed the alarm. It was a thursday, and I had to be in town by friday night to shoot a dress rehearsal.
Calming down, Kate called the airline and they assurred her that there were no flights available until early that next week! I like to play things pretty cool, stay calm under pressure but I was feeling the heat to get to Chicago in just over 24 hours.

The service rep. put us on hold for about 15 minutes trying to exhaust all the options. He found a flight that got us to chicago within an hour of the rehearsal time, with 4 layovers:) That meant no delays or cancellations in 4 airports in December! We took it and booked to the airport.
We had an awesome stay in Zurich, our overnight layover. Anyone been to Zurich?
What a city. Situated on the shores of Lake Zurich and with the Alps as a distant backdrop, Zurich was a beautiful city. Along the River Quai, the Old Town is an incredible walk with its narrow alleyways, quiet squares, and picturesque hotels. We checked out Cafe Odeon, where Lenin sat out the first World War. Ok, nobody cares about that but Russian history is so fascinating:)

A short distance from the Old Town is Zurich's (and the world's) most impressive shopping street, the Bahnhofstrasse. I guess it is renowned throughout the world for its array of elegant, sophisticated shops and department stores. They were right, Kate and I could not have purchased anything more than a pair of socks at these stores, they were classy.

We made it to Chicago and to the rehearsal within 15 minutes of when we needed to arrive: Gotta love God's humor, or our stupid luck:)
