dressings of life

Just had to feel like I was sittin in my living room in naperville for a few hours watching college football. Scots love their soccer, as do I, but sometimes you gotta get some taste of home, you feelin me?
We've got the projector for Eikon at our pad, so I threw it up on our wall, made spaghetti and ordered the #1 Ohio State v. #2 Michigan game. The game was amazing for those who saw it.
Sometimes you just miss the little things: having to pay for katchup at fast-food joints (grrr), no ranch dressing in any god-forsaken grocer store in this country, butter without table-spoon markings, a freezer larger than 3 inches x .5 inches, ice cubes (actually, I'm getting used to this whole room-temp. liquids. I'm beginning to understand why Europeans are so annoyed by how much ice americans use in their drinks:), that pesky celcius/fahrenheit conversion (can anyone tell me this), the driver seat on the right side and driving stick-shift with your left hand (think about it, that's just tough). I'll stop now, but it really is the small dressings of life that you miss when unavailable. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder: so true, I'm going to roll around in some ranch dressing the next time I see it!
We also set up the projector and watched the West Wing, it was beautiful. It's amazing, we have a built-in theater in our flat.....the things we do when we're craving free entertainment!

:), ahhhh katusk! I feel you. there were days in addis that i would have killed for a slice of malnatti's pizza or even dorritos as sad as that sounds. it's the little things...are you ready for a good ol' game of monopoly back in Chi? i'm craving a good match of monops...has dave told you i'm going back to addis? we can miss the little things together:)
But think about it. Back in the States you're gonna miss cobbled streets, tiny narrow doors and Deuchars!
Just so you all know, things aren't normal back here either. The Bears have an offense and are 9-1, the cubs are spending a ton of money in the off-season on quality free agents, and the bulls are on a four game losing streak...oh, i guess some things are the same :)
Think and pray about you both often. Keep up the great work!
Joel
Kate,
Your really need to invest in a REAL freezer. I'm Scottish/Taiwanese and just couldn't live with that wee freezer you have. Tell Dave to give you £60 and go to Argos and buy a freezer!
Fraser is right, you'd miss us too much. I need you to move to a bigger apartment because those doors make me feel so FAT cuz I have to open both to get through. The black wall paper place was much better :o)
Culture shock is a great thing eh!
Glad Dave's mum and dad are here to bring a taste of home - make your home a little America - and be proud of it. I'll even lend you the new West Wing when Luke brings it back.
love ya,
yvonne x
we're lovin life here, couldn't ask for a better place to be. If paying for katchup and converting celcius is our concerns, life is pretty good in Scotland.
As for the freezer Yvonne, it's not necessarily a scottish thing, it's probably more a small apartment in the heart of the city thing:)
It's fun to talk about the little differences.
Maybe we should discuss the things we don't miss at home and what we love here, though I think we do that all the time:)
Frazer, deuchers will certainly be missed, it's so much better than pepsi, less sweet:)
Hey Dave, we know you guys love it here :o) But you know, I really miss ranch dressing too. We should all visit Mike and Claire cuz his mum sends him some that he makes up.
As for Deuchers, no thanks! Kopperberg pear cider is much nicer. Let's do an Albanach night and invite Fraser :o)
Davie,
Miss ya tons... me and Jill are planning a trip. we need to talk so we can find a good time to come. I am thinking march or april. I have almost enough frequent flier miles to come to EU. I will only have to pay for about $300 worth for two tickets. Let me know when is a good time. We are planning to backpack for 3 weeks or so. I am so excited. It will be good. I can't wait to come visit. Call me or find me online.
J
dave, tell like it is brother.
j, put me in your backpack.
joel, never lose the dream. it's chicago - we're destined to be champions.
yvonne, i need to come to scotland so i can meet you - dave and kate say such wonderful things about you guys.
for the record, seagrams is the best.
An Albanach night with me invited sounds great. Especially if Kirsty is working behind the bar!
lol Dave, I craved Portillos when I was gone. Glad you could catch the michigan vs ohio state game, it was a biggie. Looking forward to seeing you both soon! the Celcius to Fahrenheit thing is like this F=(9/5)C+32 =) Take it easy.
